Nepal: See thousands of buffalo BEHEADED in world’s BIGGEST animal sacrifice [GRAPHIC]
Thousands of buffaloes were slaughtered to kick-start Nepal's Gadhimai Mela festival, the world's largest animal sacrifice in Bariyarpur, Bara district on Friday.
Held every five years, hundreds of thousands of buffalo, pigs, pigeons, ducks, hens and rats are sacrificed by sword and machete in an enclosed field. The festival takes place close to the temple of Goddess Gadhimai, a Hindu deity, to which the sacrifices are offered.
An estimated 5,000 buffaloes were sacrificed on Friday morning, a figure drastically lower than the 25,000 killed in 2009. The drop in numbers is reportedly due to animal rights activists attempting to dissuade participants.
A reported 125,000 goats have been sold in markets close to the temple over the last three months, many of which are expected to be sacrificed on Saturday.
